Product:
Glenfiddich 15 yo Solera Reserve
Reason:
Having learned more about the Solera Reserve in recent times. I am intrigued every time I taste it and I wanted to challenge myself by trying to harness some of its flavours and create a classically styled cocktail.
Cocktail Name:
3Wood Sling
Build:
50 ml Glenfiddich 15 Year Old Solera Reserve
10 ml Makers Mark bourbon
15 ml PX Sherry
1 Dash Angostura bitters
1 Dash Regan’s orange bitters
1 Large bar spoon of creamed butter (unsalted)
2 Bar spoons gomme syrup
2 Orange twists (for garnish)
Method:
Add all ingredients (except orange twist) into a mixing glass. Add ice, shake hard for approx 10 seconds and double strain into a Short Sling Glass. Flame 1 orange twist over the drink, rub around the rim and discard. Wrap the other around a metal golf club stirring rod and place it in the drink.
*After attending a Glenfiddich tasting of the 15 year old Solera Reserve where we were lucky enough to try the 3 different cask aged whiskies that are used in making Solera reserve. I was inspired to create a drink and use ingredients that would heighten and represent the characteristics that each cask brought to the whisky whilst still retaining the whiskies integrity. When I tried the whisky from the "ex-bourbon casks" I got a lot of corn and butter hence the use of a little bourbon and butter. To represent the "sherry cask" whisky I used the sweetness of PX sherry and to draw on the spice that I found in the "new oak cask" whisky I have used a combination of Angostura and Regan’s Orange bitters. Finally after trying all three whiskies together in the finished product that is Solera Reserve I found a slight orange sweetness lingering so I could not think of a better way to compliment the drink than with the caramelized oils of a flamed orange twist!! All of this contributes to an almost "super" version of Glenfiddich 15 year old Solera Reserve!
